Working in a large law firm in New York City, I have had great experience with multifunction color laser printers. We have had our share of them. These printers are extremely expensive; however these printers can do it all. I will run down the features that you want to look for in these printers, and then recommend a brand that we have been using.

They are called multifunction because they can do many different things, like scan, copy, print and fax. Many of these laser printers can spit out copies and prints very quickly. Some of these can do over two hundred thousand copies per month. The copier is extremely fast on these machines, but they also come with something called ADF, or auto document feeder. This is a great tool where you can put in about fifty pages that you want copied, and it will feed it into the copier for you and make your copies.

Coupled with the ADF, is duplex technology. Almost all of these printers have automatic duplex, which is the ability to print on both sides. These printers can actually reload the paper for you instead of you having to go into the paper storing area and reload the paper. This causes extremely fast and efficient prints. Multifunction laser printers usually come with internet capabilities, and the best ones have gigabit Ethernet (one gigabyte per second speed).

They also have wireless printers which we have in our firm, and it is great. This gives you the ability to print wherever you are in the office. Most of the printers come with wireless b and g capabilities, and for the price of these, I am sure draft-n will be introduced soon as well. Toner on these printers can be expensive, but they last for thousands and thousands of prints.

Most companies that sell these expensive machines give you the toner for a nice discount since you spent so much on the machine. Buy toner in bulk since you will definitely use it, so you might as well get it on the cheap. Some of the printers come with memory drives that enable you to save your files onto the printer for easy access. For example, let’s say you want to print something out, but in thirty minutes. You can save the file to the printer and then access it later at the printer and print it from the printer.

The printer we have, which is the best multifunction laser printer I have used is the HP Color Laser Jet 8550 GN. It costs over seven thousand dollars new, but with the features that it has and the amazing print speed, it is essential for our large Manhattan office. This printer can print many different sizes automatically, print labels, print directly on envelopes for easy mailing, and much more. HP sent a technician to set it up for us and said that if there is ever a problem to call him personally as he will come and fix it next day. Multifunction color laser printers are essential in large offices and can only help your business. It is well worth the investment.
